Wholesale jewelry and accessories

Tis the holiday season, and with this festive time of year come the traditions of holiday celebrations and, of course, the annual custom of holiday shopping, which for many feels like an annual chore that can come with the annual tradition of a holiday headache.

Finding the perfect presents to fulfill wish lists can daunt even the most seasoned gifting guru. One way to prevent your holiday merriment from turning into a holiday meltdown is simply to think outside the big-box store. Avoid the frenzy of overcrowded name brand megastores and shopping centers to let your holiday spirit roam free among the native Bay Area shops and boutiques that are as unique as Marin itself. Let our list of local gift stores be the saving grace of your holiday season sanity. Give the gift of Marin.

Great Acorn Company Inc.

Nestled in the junction where downtown San Rafael ends and downtown San Anselmo begins, sits the Great Acorn Company. Originally opening its doors in 1976, The Great Acorn was purchased in 1995 from its original founder, Judy Tilt, by co-owners Judy Morris, a San Anselmo resident, and Mary Rathbun, who is from Ross. This store’s eclectic collection, which includes clothing, accessories, homewares, books, stationary, and more, predominantly features jewelry handcrafted by various Bay Area artists.

Terrestra

In keeping with its name, Terrestra focuses on natural materials that come from the earth. Ray Kristof and Amy Satran, husband and wife who own and curate Terrestra, travel abroad to cull distinctive ceramic, glass and wood pieces from international designers, while also sourcing handcrafted fashion accessories and jewelry from individual artists—not wholesale manufacturers—across the U.S. Terrestra in Mill Valley opened less than a year ago as a companion to its San Francisco counterpart.

Beach House Style

Friends Susan Delurgio and Alisha Peterson founded Beach House Style in 2006, to combine their shared love of the easy, breezy sand and surf lifestyle. Brimming with all the airy interior trappings of a beach house, BHS also offers its own custom line of reclaimed wood furniture. You can keep a bit of summer’s warmth all year long with Beach House Style. This downtown Fairfax treasure is one of Marin’s better kept retail secrets.

Toby’s Store

Toby’s is a product of its environment, stocked with seasonal produce and dairy from the surrounding West Marin farms. This is a place where gourmands can find locally pressed olive oils, premium coffees and tea, all-natural snacks, and even feed for animals—large and small—of discerning taste. The homegrown charm of a farm shop suits holiday tables. The scenic drive through Point Reyes makes this a holiday trip in and of itself, or at least a holiday detour worth taking.

Moss & Daughters

Tolan Clark Florence, a Mill Valley native and the wife of Food Network star Tyler Florence, describes her home gifts store as a “low-key family affair.” It joined the pre-existing dynasty of Florence owned businesses—Moss&Moss, El Paseo and Tyler Florence Shop—clustered together within the same block, when it opened in 2012. Simpatico candles, Mosser Glass cake stands, vintage stemware and decorative bird feeders are but a few of Mrs. Florence’s favorite things that you’ll find at her so-called “happy place.”

McLean Artisans Are Ready for the Holiday jewelry Season

The Artisans co-owner, Shannon Denny Price, hangs up some of the new felt ornaments in the shop.

Shannon Denny Price has seen her shop, The Artisans, move three times in the last 25 years.

#As a veteran of the holiday season, the shop co-owner has already begun filling the store with holiday decor as well as gifts and stocking stuffers of all price points. Christmas trees, themed wreaths and ornaments will all be available for purchase.

#“Jewelry is probably one of the top selling items for the holidays,” Denny Price said.

#In addition to the ornaments, jewelry and hand lotions, among many other items, the shop also has a “man corner” where presents and stocking stuffers, like a moose wine stopper or decorative socks, can be found.

#“We know that men can be hard to shop for,” said Denny Price.

#The shop is so packed with high quality, curated items from both local and national artists and artisans that it is impossible to see everything just on the first lap around the store. Whether a customer looks low or high, everything from bug brooches to screenprinted eyeglasses holders can be found.

#“We also do really well selling our scarves,” she said.

#Some of the scarves and mittens are made from recycled sweaters, bringing some personality and a story to every piece.

#Sales associate Ramita Upreti said she loves working in the shop as much as she loves to buy items from it. She has been working at The Artisans for eight years.

#“I love this store,” she said. “I buy so much here.”

#She said the nicer, more expensive jewelry and silk scarves always sell fast during the holidays.

#Denny Price was beginning to hang the ornaments in the shop last week - some of which included hedgehogs and mermaids. Additionally, an array of Hanukkah items, like silver menorahs, necklaces and even a challah bread mold for the gluten intolerant, are available. One jeweled menorah, she said, already has been sold recently.

#Many of her items, she said, are found during large craft fairs and online wholesale shops year around.

#“I personally don’t like buying online, though, because I like to touch and feel things,” she said. “It’s really nice to be able to talk to the artist and ask them how they make things.”

#Just like previous years, The Artisans will be participating in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29.

Story of lost wedding ring

About 15 years ago, Lacey Butler’s mom lost a priceless piece of jewelry: her wedding ring.

“We searched the house high and low for months,” Butler wrote on YouTube, adding that the family finally concluded that the ring had been either lost or stolen.

But late last month, Butler says her dad made an incredible discovery. There, stashed in a small wooden box that he had found by chance, was the long-lost ring.

“We knew reuniting [my mom with her ring] was going to be emotional enough but dad and I had to add a twist,” wrote Butler. And what a wonderfully romantic twist it was.

In the video above, watch as Butler’s dad proposes to his wife of 38 years with the ring she’d lost so long ago.

Getting down on one knee in the garage of their home, he’s seen pulling out the ring and presenting it to his wife. Her reaction is beyond words.

(Watch the big reveal in the video above.)

Reflecting on the special proposal, Butler noted that her mom may have been a “little dramatic” in her reaction, “but hey, it's her missing wedding ring!”

Congratulations on the second engagement, lovebirds!

Wedding jewelry sets season

Wedding jewelry sets in this wedding season

No wedding is complete without the sparkling stones and shining metals that are intricately crafted to make a young bride’s D-day more special. A woman's love for jewels is legendary, and the same becomes even more heightened when it comes to buying the ‘bridal jewellery’.

With the wedding season setting in the Capital, wedding jewelry sets designers have come out with the latest and best in their wedding collections to offer the brides-to-be.

Designers have passed their verdict on the trends that will be in demand this year.

Some say that blue sapphires will make a splash, while others swear by the ever popular combination of emeralds, rubies and diamonds that look stunning with any attire.

“Tanzanites for other occasions are in trend too, but for Indian weddings, in metals, the yellow gold will always be the first preference, since it goes well with the Indian skin tone as well as the garments. Platinum and white gold compliment other occasions during the wedding, such as cocktail and reception,” says Juhee Bolakhe, assistant design manager, Ganjam (a jewellery brand).

For every jewellery designer it is a challenge to create a piece that would define the aspirations of the bride.

Since the preferences and pattern of jewelry change not just every year, but every wedding season (especially in winter and summer), it gets difficult for the designers to create pieces that justify their price tag.

“The customers also look for innovations, design, techniques and something unique every time they visit a store,” says Gursimran Chaddha, CEO and creative director of Jagat Jewels.

He says that even today brides “prefer traditional styles but with a little contemporary touch to it.”

This has made the brand include chandbalas, cuffs and jhumki in their bridal collection.

Chaddha also states that they haven’t incorporated armlets because, “Chandbalas and jhumkis are traditional and timeless and therefore, consumers are more likely to invest in them than something seasonal, like armlets.”

However, designers do offer customised hathphools and mang tikas on specific demands.

But not everyone would like to go for these in gold due to the steep price of the metal.

So one can also opt for “Silver with 22 carat gold layering and gold finish which will be very popular this season. Also, platinum wedding rings will be very much in vogue too,” says Sumit Sawhney from Apala by Sumit.

Sawhney’s experiments in silver jewellery and his latest bridal collection is inspired from tribal elements combined with royal elements.

He encourages the brides to get versatile with various accessories.

“South Indian inspired pieces will be in fashion this season since multi-layering of jewelry is passe. Antique gold silver with coloured stones in unconventional fluorescent shades of green, sky blue, coral, orange-pink and red will be a big hit too. And brides can go for not just hathphools but even mathapattis, since trends have changed drastically,” he says as Metrolife wonders about the Rajasthani culture, where mathapattis are a must.

Steven Bacon walked into the International Diamond Center focused on happily ever after. He wanted the perfect engagement ring for the girl who grabbed his heart in grade school.

The 27-year-old knew nothing about diamonds or their cut, color, clarity and carat. He had never heard of a gem scope, let alone looked through one. His only notable jewelry purchase had been a pair of diamond earrings for Christmas one year.

"I didn't know what I was doing,'' he said later.

His sales associate, Karen Miller, had seen his type before and walked him patiently through the process. She showed him examples of different price points, gave him an overview of diamonds and asked questions about his girlfriend's tastes.

Dozens of rings later, one rose above the rest. When his girlfriend, Kate Ward, found it sparkling in the bottom of a champagne glass, she gave her approval with a resounding, "YES!!!''

"She loved it and said I did an outstanding job,'' said Bacon, a brand manager for a fitness company who lives in St. Petersburg. "She liked that I did it alone and made it a surprise.''

Bacon is exactly the kind of customer fine jewelry stores want in these challenging economic times. While many shoppers have cut back on luxury purchases, people are still falling in love and getting married. For many couples, a diamond ring remains a must-have part of the tradition.

Stores hope couples form an emotional attachment to the place they bought their rings, ultimately becoming repeat customers.

The International Diamond Center shifted its focus toward bridal business in 2009 after sales of high-end fashion jewelry plummeted during the recession. It added designer lines, expanded showroom space for bridal sets and upped its inventory of engagement rings in the $4,000 to $6,000 range, the most popular.

"You have to be a chameleon,'' said Brian Stamey, head of the store's buying division. "If you're not adapting, you're not going to make it in this business.''

Stamey's father-in-law, Keith Leclerc, started the business as a wholesale jeweler in 1983, traveling around the country selling jewelry to large retailers. The family-run company has since expanded to eight retail locations in Florida, including its original store along Ulmerton Road in Clearwater, and one in Savannah, Ga.

In March, it opened a Tampa store along N Dale Mabry Highway, something that would have been too risky a few years ago. The store took over space occupied by Avante Gold Jewelers, which struggled through the lean times and closed in February after more than 30 years. Suanne Abeles, who owned the store with her husband, Jeff, now works as International Diamond Center's store manager.

Many of Avante Gold's customers are now International Diamond Center customers.

Diamond jewelry sales amount to $72 billion a year worldwide, a figure that has grown dramatically in the past 25 years. The United States represents the largest market, about 50 percent, according to the World Diamond Council. Japan holds the next largest slice, at 15 percent, followed by Italy (5 percent), India (3 percent) and China (2 percent). Research has shown diamond jewelry is the most sought-after category of luxury item.

The industry took a blow in 2008 when many recession-weary consumers pushed fine jewelry to the bottom of their shopping lists. Many stores consolidated or closed. Earlier this year, well-known Continental Jewelers in Tampa shuttered after 30 years.

"You saw businesses getting huge drops, and it's safe to say some have not recovered,'' said Rob Bates, senior editor of New York City-based JCK, a monthly magazine for the jewelry trade industry. "It was scary for a long time.''

Stores survived by boosting their bridal collections, buying gold and selling less expensive items such as silver, charms and beads, he said. While some high-end jewelers balked at the shift, buying gold and selling charms became traffic builders.

"A lot of people are intimidated by going into a jewelry store,'' Bates said. "This gets people through the door and allows them to think it's not so bad.''

Steve and Julie Weintraub, owners of the Gold & Diamond Source in Clearwater, said they started buying gold after they lost about 70 percent of their customer base. Loyal clients who lost money in the real estate crash disappeared. At the same time, gold prices reached historic highs.

"The business turned upside down,'' said Steve Weintraub, who has 33 years' in the industry. "We knew we had to do something. We were one of the first ones to buy gold.''

On average, jewelry stores make a 10 to 15 percent profit on gold they buy from customers and sell to refiners. The best pieces are resold at stores, but most of the gold chains and outdated or broken items are melted.

It's a competitive business made even more so by the emergence of gold-buying stores in strip centers, which have lower overhead than jewelry stores.

Stores see a spike in gold selling whenever the price goes up, Weintraub said. In September 2011, traffic doubled when gold hit $1,900 an ounce. (It was about $1,745 last week.)

Both the International Diamond Center and the Gold & Diamond Source used revenue from gold buying to invest in their bridal selections. Like other stores, they also employed coin and currency experts to do on-site valuations.

"The gold buying really bridged us,'' Weintraub said. "We've enjoyed fast growth over the last few years, but it hasn't been easy. It required us to change.''

Success has led to cramped quarters for the 7,000-square-foot store, which also houses the offices of Julie Weintraub's nonprofit group Hands Across the Bay. Next month, the store plans to open a 2,200-square-foot addition to better display its bridal ring collection, its first expansion in more than a decade.

Bates, the magazine editor, said the market is shifting toward jewelry with special meaning for the giver and receiver, like engagement rings. Rather than bling, consumers want jewelry that signifies something more. He noted the success of Jane Seymour's Open Heart collection at Kay Jewelers, the motto of which sends a mushy message: "If your heart is open, love will always find its way in.''

Bacon, whose wedding is set for April, is a new believer in sentimental purchases. He talks about Miller, his saleswoman at the International Diamond Center, as if she were a friend. He remembers every detail of his shopping experience, right down to the exciting fact that he was able to watch Alabama crush Arkansas on TV.

When asked if he'll go back there for their wedding bands, he said most definitely.

"They treated me like royalty,'' he said. "If you can't find something there you like, you're just way too picky.''

Diamond and jewelry companies in China are operating in a dynamic and changing environment. In 2013, as the country’s economic growth has slowed, albeit to an enviable 7.5 percent, polished diamond demand has become cautious, affecting sentiment in the global trade.

But that doesn’t necessarily affect China’s long-term diamond and jewelry growth story. The country’s wholesale and retail trade continues to work to better understand the demographic trends and evolving consumer preferences in the country to ensure their position in the market.

Kent Wong, managing director of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery (pictured), notes the cyclical nature of growth in the local jewelry market and attributed the recent caution to the government’s change in leadership.

“The leadership transition [which occurs once every 10 years] always brings a slowdown, and the new government has also implemented measures that have restrained demand, such as curbing gift-giving to government officials. That has affected sentiment in the luxury and jewelry segment,” Wong said at this week’s Rapaport International Diamond Conference (IDC). “So I would say that buying sentiment has mainly been affected by government measures and I believe we will see a recovery and confidence will improve in the second half of the year.”

Chow Tai Fook is considered the region’s largest jewelry retailer as its revenue increased 1.5 percent to $7.4 billion (HKD 57.4 billion) in fiscal year 2012-13; meanwhile, profit fell 17 percent to $730 million, due mainly to the economic slowdown. The company ended the year with 1,640 points of sale in Mainland China and 103 spread across Hong Kong, Macau and other Asian markets.

If the company expressed caution at the time, it changed its tone in the first quarter that ended June 30. Chow Tai Fook reported 63 percent revenue growth in the period driven by strong gold jewelry purchases when gold prices fell in mid-April. While Wong doesn’t expect the company will maintain such high growth levels for the remainder of the year, he recognized that consumers still see a buying opportunity in gold jewelry, as prices may have recovered but remain well below levels seen earlier in the year.

He added that the company’s diamond jewelry sales are forecasted to increase by single-digit percentages for the fiscal year, having increased by 8 percent in the first quarter, with growth driven by greater volume of sales.

The Young & the Affluent

In fact, Wong observed that the volume of China’s jewelry sales is constantly increasing, even if demand does fluctuate along with consumer sentiment when the market slows. Rather, he noted that consumers tend to shift to less expensive products in more cautious economic times.

As a result, jewelry sales in China have significantly outpaced general retail and economic growth in the past decade and the trend is expected to continue. Wong reported that the compound annual growth rate of China’s jewelry market has increased by 26 percent in the past five years and is expected to more than double to about $103 billion by 2015. By 2020, he expects China will match the U.S. as the largest jewelry market.

To capture that growth, Wong recognized the 20 to 30 year old age group as well as the affluent consumer segment as representing the greatest growth opportunity for the industry in China. Those segments are not included in the mass luxury jewelry segment – where price points fall between $256 and $12,820 – which contributes about 80 percent of Chow Tai Fook’s total revenue.

According to Wong, the 20 to 30 year olds account for an estimated 30 percent of China’s population. They fill the medium-to-low-end market segment and are the target of Chow Tai Fook’s online sales campaigns. Wong expects the company’s online sales to contribute about 5 percent of total revenue in the next five years, but recognized that the internet is more about networking and relationship building than sales growth.

Chow Tai Fook has also teamed up with Rio Tinto to enhance its diamond fashion jewelry sales, largely for the younger generation in China. The program is focused on pitching affordable pieces with diamonds sourced from Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine in Australia.

“Although the Chinese market tends to prefer white solitaire diamonds and is largely focused on diamonds for weddings, there is enormous potential to expand the non-wedding market and explore demand for affordable diamond fashion jewelry,” Wong said.

Other campaigns, such as Chow Tai Fook’s Forevermark program, are targeting China’s growing affluent population as well. The company expects affluent consumers to account for half of all private consumption in China by 2020.

Wedding jewelry china in the wedding of Jessa Duggar

JEssa Duggar weddign photo

In many ways, Jessa Duggar’s wedding with beautiful wedding jewelry china to Ben Seewald Saturday was a traditional Duggar affair, with an extensive guest list and an emphasis on their Christian beliefs and family first.

But the 21-year-old added a few of her own special touches too: The couple wrote their own vows. They served ice cream sundaes instead of cake. And she selected a blush dress for the occasion — just like these stunning celebrity brides. Get all the scoop on her big-day bridal look, below.

Jessa selected her gown — a blush cap-sleeve A-line number with a fully beaded bodice of Swarovski crystals and pearls from Allure Bridal’s modest collection — from Tesori Bridal in Fayetteville, Arkansas. After removing several layers of tulle for just the right silhouette, it was perfect. “It was the second dress I tried on,” Jessa tells PEOPLE. “I love it.”

She completed her look with a delicate heart-shaped pendant (given to her by Ben, 19, when they first started courting) and a simple veil pinned into her long, loose waves. And as for that enviable “Duggar hair” and glowing skin Jessa sported down the aisle? Turns out, having eight sisters comes in handy: They pitched in to help give Jessa her glossy, classic curls and fresh-faced, romantic makeup look.

Bridal jewelry china as for wedding gifts

A Chinese convicted of corruption channelled at least $1.2 million to his family in Sydney, in the clearest example yet of how -Australia is being used as a safe haven for illicit funds.

Documents released by a Beijing court show the bribe was paid into the Australian bank accounts of Su -Guanlin and his wife Qian Yi.

They are the son and daughter-in-law of -disgraced railway official Su Shunhu, who last Friday was convicted of -corruption in China and jailed for life. As part of the bribes, the younger Su was also paid more than $2 million by a company associated with his father and the couple received generous -Bridal jewelry china as for wedding gifts.

Over the past four years, they have bought and sold houses and -apartments worth around $4.5 million across Sydney, according to property searches.

But Ms Qian, a 29-year-old accountant, insists the properties have nothing to do with her father-in-law. “Everything we own is in our name,” said Ms Qian when contacted by phone. “It’s ours. It has nothing to do with him.”

Su’s conviction comes as China ramps up its international co-operation efforts to weed out corrupt officials who have sent their assets or fled -overseas in a campaign dubbed -“Oper-ation Fox Hunt”.

According to the US-based non-profit group Global Financial Integrity, $US2.8 trillion ($3.2 trillion) was spirited illegally out of China between 2005 and 2011.

The Australian Federal Police said it regularly co-operated with Chinese authorities and had worked with them on drawing up a priority list of targets.

A spokesman said the agency had “no information to offer” on Su’s case.

Su was convicted of abusing his -position as deputy chief of the railway ministry’s transport department by accepting 25 million yuan ($4.7 million) in bribes paid in cash, bracelets, -diamond jewellery and gold bars.

At the time, China’s railway freight development had not kept pace with the country’s rapid economic growth, leading to capacity shortages.

As a result, the railway ministry, which has since been dismantled, became a magnet for corruption.

MONEY ‘GIVEN’ TO SON, DAUGHTER-IN-LAW
According to the judgment released by the court, Su’s lawyer defended his client by arguing he was not -“evil-minded” and had not squandered the money. Rather, he had used most of it to pay for the education and -living costs of his son and daughter-in-law.

Property searches reveal the younger Mr Su and Ms Qian bought a house in Killara for $1.35 million in April last year. Neighbours said the property, which is slated for demolition and a $500,000 rebuild, had been vacant for months.

They also sold a property in Breakfast Point last year for $2.5 million and are linked to a $550,000 apartment.

They appear to have bought an apartment in Wolli Creek off the plan in October 2010 for $400,000. “I am an accountant and my -husband is working for a wholesale company,” said Ms Qian. “We’re both working and doing things. We’re not just waiting for money to be handed to us.”

However, according to the court -documents detailing the case against the elder Su, money was handed to the young couple while they were living in Australia.

When AFR Weekend visited the younger Mr Su and Ms Qian’s property in Killara, it was abandoned.

The garden was overgrown and mould had started climbing the -external walls. An industrial steel fence fastened with a rusty bike lock blocked access to the palm tree-lined pool area.

A neighbour, who declined to give her name, said it had been more than two years since she last saw the couple at the home.

“It’s such a shame what’s happening to the place,” she said. “It used to be in good shape and they’ve just let it go to rack and ruin.”

GOLD BUYING prices in London's wholesale wedding jewelry china held unchanged Thursday, trading around $1163 per ounce as new data put world demand at 5-year lows during the thirdworld stock markets ticked higher.

Silver also held flat, despite a fresh drop in other commodity prices, capping the relative ratio of gold to silver prices below 74.5 – a 5-year high when first reached last week.

Brent crude oil today broke below $80 per barrel for the first time since 2010, and US natural gas fell 2.5%.

New data from market-development organization the World Gold Council meantime said that, while world gold demand slipped from the July-Sept. period last year, India overtook China in the third quarter to regain its No.1 spot in world buying.

Gold buying by investors in the developed West fell again however, the Gold Demand Trends report said, falling 30% by value in Europe and 41% by value in the United States over the last 12 months.

As investors sold, Wednesday's close saw the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEArca:GLD) – the world's largest exchange-traded trust fund at its 2011 peak by value – again cut the amount of gold needed to back its shares.

Down 2.5% so far this month, the GLD's gold bullion holdings have now shrunk to 722 tonnes – down 10% from New Year and down 47% by weight from the end-2012 peak to reach the smallest level since the Lehman's crisis of September 2008.

"You've seen some investors come out of gold," said Marcus Grubb, director of investment research at the mining-backed World Gold Council to CNBC today, pointing to those investors "who did buy gold as a credit hedge, a hedge against the potential failure of the financial system" during the 2007-2012 crisis.

"What you're seeing now," said Grubb, "is the market returning to fundamentals, with consumer buying driving the price in the longer run – and that still looks very positive, especially in India and China."

Although dropping 37% overall in Q3 on the WGC's data from the record surge of a year earlier, China's gold jewelry buying was "on a par" it says with the third quarters of both 2011 and 2012.

Indian gold demand, in contrast, has shown a rising trend since the slump of mid-2013, forced by the government's strict anti-import rules.

With the 2014 peak in Hindu festival season demand approaching in late September, India's rise in jewelry purchases was "magnified" says the report because "consumers had [earlier] deferred their gold buying while they waited for the [Rupee] price to settle at lower levels."

Global gold mining supply meantime rose "marginally", but so-called "scrap" flows of recycled gold from existing holders fell 25% from Q3 of 2013 as lower prices, and improving economic growth, deterred new sellers.

Year-to-date, global scrap gold supplies are at the lowest level since before the financial crisis, the WGC data show.

"With both Diwali and peak Indian wedding season having passed," says today's note from South African Standard Bank's commodity division – now majority owned by China's giant ICBC – "demand is coming off the boil in India at least.

"Asian demand generally is still fairly solid however and showing signs of picking up."

New data today showed China's industrial output slowing last month towards this year's decade lows, growing 7.7% from October 2013.

Retail sales in the world's second-largest economy also grew less quickly than analysts forecast last month, which included the peak Golden Week holiday shopping spree.

Expanding 11.5% in Yuan terms year-on-year, retail sales grew at the slowest pace since early 2006 – again sparking speculation from analysts that China's slower rate of growth will "encourage further monetary easing" by the People's Bank.

Growth in China's services sector weakened slightly in September as new business cooled, a private survey showed on Wednesday, reinforcing signs of a slowdown in the world's second-largest economy that could prompt more stimulus measures.
The services purchasing managers' index (PMI) compiled by HSBC/Markit pulled back to 53.5 in September from a 17-month high of 54.1 in August.
A reading above 50 in PMI surveys indicates an expansion in activity while one below that threshold points to a contraction.
A sub-index measuring new business fell to 53.2 in September from a 19-month high of 53.9 in August, but sub-indexes measuring employment and outstanding business both inched up, painting a mixed picture.
"Overall, the services sector held up in September, despite the downward pressure seen in the manufacturing sector. We think risks to growth in the near term are still on the downside, and warrant accommodative monetary as well as fiscal policies," said Qu Hongbin, chief China economist at HSBC.
An official survey released last week showed that the services sector grew at its slowest pace in eight months in September after new orders shrank for the first time since the 2008 global financial crisis, exposing more weakness in the world's second-largest economy.
The services sector made up 46.1 percent of gross domestic product in 2013, surpassing the secondary sector - manufacturing and construction - for the first time, as the government aims to create more jobs and boost domestic consumption.
President Xi Jinping's sustained crackdown on corruption has taken a toll on sales of luxury goods and expensive dining.
Growth in China's retail sales during the long "Golden Week" holiday slowed to 12.1 percent from a 13.6 percent rise in the same period last year, data from the Ministry of Commerce showed on Wednesday.
The ministry's survey showed brisk sales of clothing, shoes, Wedding jewelry factory, digital home appliances and cars.
The number of visits to major tourist sites rose but revenue from admissions fell for the holiday week, according to China National Tourism Administration figures on Tuesday, pointing to deeper discounts to attract travelers.
DOWNSIDE RISKS
Last week, a pair of surveys showed China's manufacturing sector held up in September but remained subdued in a sign that the economy is still struggling to recover its growth momentum -despite recent policy support.
Steps unveiled since April included reserve requirement cuts for selected banks and faster investment in railways and public housing. But much of their broader impact may have been offset by a cooling property market and tighter credit as banks grow more cautious about lending as the economy cools.
In a bid to avert a deeper slide in the housing market, China's central bank and banking regulator relaxed lending rules for second-home buyers on Sept. 30 by giving them a 30 percent discount on mortgage rates and cutting their down payment levels to 30 percent from 60-70 percent.
"We think the easing lending condition is more impactful compared with unwinding of previous housing purchase restrictions. As such, we expect the systemic risk arising from property sector to be contained," OCBC said in a research note on Wednesday.
Other economists are not so sure. A glut of unsold and unoccupied homes and buyers' expectations of further price declines could temper any rebound.
The central bank said on Sunday it will use various monetary tools to maintain adequate liquidity and reasonable growth in credit and social financing.
Analysts expect more policy measures will be needed to help achieve the government's growth target of around 7.5 percent this year, although any dramatic stimulus looks unlikely as reform-minded top leaders have shown greater tolerance for slower growth.
The government is due to release September data on trade, bank lending, investment and factory output in the coming week or so, leading up to third-quarter GDP on Oct. 21
"The upcoming September data release will likely show a tentative improvement in real economic activity, but unlikely be strong enough to prevent full third-quarter growth from falling to 7.1 percent year on year, adding pressure on the government to further intensify policy support," Tao Wang, China economist at USB, said in a note.
